Tents (often called Tents and Trees) is a placement puzzle set on a campsite: each tree needs its own tent beside it, tents may not touch each other, and the numbers round the edge give how many tents are in each row and column. The puzzle is ready below; click an empty square to pitch a tent.

How to play
- There are exactly as many tents as trees.
- Each tent is paired with its own tree directly above, below, left or right of it (not diagonally). A tent may also touch other trees.
- No two tents touch, not even diagonally.
- The number of tents in each row and column matches the clue for that line.
Sizes and difficulty
Presets are 8×8, 10×10 and 15×15, each at Easy or Tricky. Neither level needs guessing; Tricky just needs more involved deductions.
Solving tips
Mark as grass every square that does not touch a tree orthogonally, and fill lines with a 0 clue straight away. When a row's tents are all placed, right-drag the rest of it to grass. A tree with only one free neighbour gets its tent there, and every square around a placed tent, diagonals included, becomes grass. Where a row needs k tents in a stretch that can only fit k non-touching tents, their positions are forced.
Where this puzzle comes from
Tents is part of Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection, a set of about forty logic puzzles written by Simon Tatham and contributors and released under the MIT licence. Every grid is generated on the spot, so the supply never runs out, and for the grid-logic puzzles the generator makes sure each has exactly one solution, reachable by reasoning rather than guessing. The version here is the collection's own code compiled to WebAssembly; the Game menu can save a puzzle to a file and load it again, and the Type menu changes the size and difficulty.
Frequently asked questions
Can a tent be next to two trees?
Yes, it can touch several trees, but it counts as the tent for only one of them, and every tree must have its own tent.
Do I need to guess at the harder level?
No. Both Easy and Tricky can be solved by deduction alone.
Is Tents free to play here?
Yes, with no limit on the number of puzzles. Tents is open-source software under the MIT licence, and every grid is generated fresh when you press New game.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. A tap works as a click and the puzzle resizes to fit the screen. Puzzles whose controls use the right mouse button are easier with a mouse.
