Play Marchers — a free walker puzzle game Runs natively — no emulator
Marchers are small, brave and completely unable to steer. They pour out of a hatch and walk straight ahead into pits, water and fire unless you step in. You can't move them; you can only hand out jobs. Make one dig, one build a stair across a gap, one stand still and turn the others back, and get enough of the crowd home before the clock runs out. 20 original levels, no download, no sign-up.
Written from scratch for ExeBrowser in plain JavaScript. Every marcher, rock and sound is drawn or synthesised by the game itself, so it starts instantly and runs on a phone. Open it full screen.
Controls — what does what
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Give a job | Pick a job in the bottom bar (or press 1–8), then click a marcher. The number on each job is how many you have left. |
| Release rate | − and + set how fast marchers leave the hatch. You can't go below the level's minimum. |
| Look around | Drag the level, scroll the wheel, use the arrow keys, or click the minimap. |
| Pause / fast forward | The ❚❚ and ▸▸ buttons. Jobs can be handed out while paused. |
| Give up | The bomb button blows up every marcher — press it twice. Restart and the menu are next to it. |
| Phone / tablet | Tap a marcher to give it the job; long-press to pick one that isn't already busy. Drag to scroll. |
The eight jobs
- Driller digs straight down through soft ground.
- Borer tunnels sideways through a wall in the direction it's facing.
- Delver digs diagonally downward, for when straight down would drop the crowd too far.
- Mason lays a stair of twelve bricks up and across. When it runs out and shrugs, give it the Mason job again to keep building.
- Stopper plants its feet and turns everyone else around. It stays there for good, unless you blow it up.
- Glider opens a canopy and survives any fall. It keeps this ability for the rest of the level.
- Scaler climbs straight up walls. It also keeps it.
- Fuse counts down about five seconds and explodes, leaving a crater. Steel doesn't break.
Steel plates can't be dug at all. Arrowed rock can only be cut in the direction the arrows point. Water, fire and snap traps are deadly whatever job a marcher has.
Getting more of them home
- Pause first. Read the whole level before the hatch opens; scroll to the exit and work backwards.
- One Stopper buys time. Plant it early so the crowd paces back and forth safely while you prepare the route.
- Count your bricks. A Mason's stair is twelve steps. When it shrugs at the end, give it another Mason job to carry on.
- Slow the hatch when the route needs one marcher to do a lot of work first.
- Fast forward the long walks once the route is safe.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Lemmings?
No. Marchers is an original game written from scratch for this site, in the same genre as the walker-rescue puzzle games of the early 1990s such as Lemmings (1991). Its levels, art, sound and text are all new, it contains nothing from Lemmings, and it is not affiliated with DMA Design, Psygnosis, Sony or any rights holder. It was built from a written description of how the genre's rules work, kept separate from the original games. See the provenance notice.
How do I play?
Marchers drop from the hatch and walk forward until something stops them. Pick a job in the bottom bar, then click (or tap) a marcher to give it that job. Save at least the percentage shown under NEED before time runs out to unlock the next level.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Marchers is plain JavaScript that runs in the page, about 150 KB with every graphic and sound generated by the game itself. It loads instantly and works on a phone.
Does it save my progress?
Yes. Unlocked levels and your best result on each are kept in this browser on this device.
